On May 1, 2012 Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie) started the “Worse than Bad” campaign to create as much publicity as possible for Shell’s reckless pollution in the Niger Delta. Over the last 50 years, Shell has helped turn the Niger Delta into the world's largest oil spill. An area half the size of Florida is completely contaminated.
Sadly, most of the world is still unaware that this problem even exists.
With the help of our audience we want to raise our voice. The largest oil spill in the world is growing every day, and that needs to be stopped. So, we asked our audience to create a different kind of oil spill. Spills that are no longer somewhere in Africa, but in our backyards, and in our neighborhoods. Spills created by our audience that are remarkable enough to get noticed.
We hope this will make the world pay attention.
Website visitors are also offered other ways to access information on the “silent” oil disaster in the Niger Delta, and to share this information. They can support Friends of the Earth Netherlands in its legal case against Shell, which would require Shell to clean up the mess and compensate the victims. In addition, Dutch visitors will have the opportunity to accompany Milieudefensie and a Dutch broadcasting company on a mission to Nigeria to become a witness and an ambassador.
