Crew of 12 returns safely from Nigeria Mission!

The four volunteers along with Milieudefensie and Vara Vroege Vogels are back in Amsterdam after their 10-day mission in Nigeria. Their job was to be witnesses to the oil disaster that is taking place in the Niger Delta, and report back on everything they see to the Netherlands and the rest of the world.  Watch the documentary about their trip at Vara’s Vroege Vogels, which airs October 5th.

“Shell in August 2012 promissed to clean up its oil spills in Ogoniland as UNEP advised. To our disappointment, but unfortunately not to our surprise, Shell still hardly addresses the environmental and social problems it causes in the Niger Delta. Answers to questions are insufficient. Proposals vague. Promises non-commital.

The beginning of a solution is still as far away as it was yesterday. Living with Shell is still bad in the Niger Delta. And it keeps getting worse every day. Therefore, we will continue to ask for the world’s attention. And we ask you to keep supporting us until the Niger Delta is cleaned!”

SHELL MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

WE DEMAND THAT SHELL ANNOUNCES THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

  • Develop a solid plan to clean up the oil pollution in the entire Niger Delta.
As recommended by the UN, this plan should include Shell depositing $1 billion to a special emergency fund for the most urgent clean up operations.
  • Close all oil wells that are illegally flaring gas before January 1, 2013.
  • Develop a clear plan to improve the maintenance of the pipeline network in Nigeria, and protect them against theft and sabotage.
  • Offer serious financial compensation to farmers and fishermen whose means of living have been destroyed as a result of the oil leaks.
